Department of Industrial Design

In an age when devices communicate with each other, operate autonomously and make decisions based on artificial intelligence, the challenges facing industrial design are enormous. Today, there are actually dozens of areas of post-industrial design. “Design thinking” – the key working tool of the industrial designer – is the main means of dealing with these challenges.

Studies in the Department of Industrial Design at Bezalel equip industrial designers with the knowledge and skills to face these challenges, and stand on two foundations:

the traditional foundation that cultivates ancient and industrial techniques, and the technological foundation that includes current and broadminded research and an

up-to-date set of tools that is constantly renewed. Being part of Bezalel enriches the department through a broad holistic approach, which enables a design process that is a creative operating language, reacts to the changing world, generates new opportunities and looks to the future.

This is a four-year degree program. The first two years are dedicated to practical and theoretical infrastructures, from working with wood, metal and plastic, to software and computerized design tools. From the second year, the spotlight is directed at the human-product interface, with the option to choose individual courses in the department and outside. In the third year, a personalized curriculum is built according to each student’s interests and skills, while deepening their exposure to advanced technologies and new materials, as well as collaborations with technological and industrial bodies and corporate innovation leaders. In this year, student exchanges are available with leading institutions in the world, where students are exposed to design culture and diverse professional approaches from around the world. The fourth year is dedicated to the student׳s final projects, in which they bring together the theoretical knowledge and research and the practical skills they have acquired over the course of their studies.

The teaching faculty reflects the department’s central position in the field of industrial design: young professionals alongside seasoned experts, some of whom are active designers in the commercial field and others in the artistic and academic arena, award winners in Israel and around the world who regularly participate in international conferences and exhibitions and are connected to current as well as cutting-edge innovations at the forefront of

knowledge and action
