Department of Visual and Material Culture

We live in a world in which networks and new forms of communication are constantly vying for our attention,

where algorithms calculate sentience and user experience, where boundaries are increasingly blurred and even finding love has an app. Is this reality or an illusion?

The Department of Visual and Material Culture is the only program in Israel offering a theoretical degree in a creative environment. Over the three years of studies, students grapple with the theoretical and research dimensions

of the fields of visual and material culture.

As part of the studies, students will develop their ability to observe, examine, and think about everyday questions in a new, creative and boundary-breaking way.

Students will experience working hands-on with ideas, and will take both theoretical and practical courses in a variety of Bezalel’s departments, with a unique connection between theory and practice.

As part of their studies, students will meet with researchers, creators and artists, be part of a creative community and experience a new kind of academic learning: personal, emotional, empowering and mind-broadening.

Studies include workshops, reading groups, personal guidance in projects, student exchanges abroad and connections with leading cultural and research institutions in Israel and around the world.

The teaching faculty in the department come from the fields of history, critical theory and philosophy of art as well as from the practical fields of fine arts, architecture and design. At the new Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Bezalel Campus in the Jerusalem city center, students have access to diverse learning spaces where they will be active partners in thought and creative projects from the very first moments

of their studies.
