Department of Visual Communication

The Department of Visual Communication at Bezalel is the oldest department of visual communication in Israel and the founder of the Israeli design space.

Generations of department graduates are leading designers in the local field and prominent figures in the centers of international activity. The department provides its graduates with an in-depth professional infrastructure and mastery of the wide range of discipline-related practices: graphic design, branding, typography design, UX/UI, games, illustration, comics, motion design and more. Through shape, color, movement, sound, signal and image, visual communication enables the transmission of messages, ideas, feelings and information that have the power to change reality.

The discourse in the department is open, exciting and challenging. It comprises a wide variety of voices of students from all over the country who have different and sometimes opposing approaches, making for a fertile and mind-broadening discussion. The teaching faculty consists of leading practicing designers in their field who refine and expand the learning experience and develop innovative teaching methods while constantly striving for excellence.

The multifaceted learning experience in the department includes workshops, lectures, conferences, guest lecturers from the international field, exhibitions and events. Studying in Jerusalem, in a social environment that lives and breathes design around the clock, creates a unique educational and creative climate. The department’s broad international connections with more than 200 leading academic institutions around the world, the student exchange program and the unmediated connection to the latest happenings in the industry, make the study experience in the department one-of-a-kind in Israel – in terms of both the professional wealth and the scope of the exposure to an abundance of approaches, creators and techniques.

At the end of four intensive, creative and life-altering years of study, the department’s graduates can be found in leadership roles and as entrepreneurs in the fields of illustration, games, graphic design, branding and UX, as designers in independent studios or in large and established international companies. Their works can be seen on bookshelves, in app stores, on television and in magazines, in museums and art galleries. Using the wonder and magic of visual communication, they are changing the face of the visual space in Israel.
