The two-year Master’s Program in Visual Communication (M.Des.), the only one of its kind in Israel, promotes practice-based research to train its students to lead in-depth processes through design and act as agents of change in the contemporary social, cultural and technological spaces. Visual communication is an expression of the forces that shape our lives. The task of this discipline is to shape the communication and relationships among humans and between humans and nature and the environment, and to impart knowledge of all of these. But even more than this, in its creative and critical methods, visual communication is a force that can create worlds and bring about change through visual language and storytelling. At the core of the curriculum are three central pedagogical principles: development of disciplinary flexibility that allows for the formulation of critical questions about social and economic mechanisms; the synthesis of theory and practice to develop a comprehensive and critical position in relation to the field of professional action and expand its boundaries; recognition of the importance of visual communication on the local and regional levels in strengthening a just and democratic society. Studies combine a practical, theoretical division and joint practice-based research laboratories that focus on various issues and methodologies and sharpen the role of the design field in dealing with contemporary questions and challenges. The program’s faculty, in combination with guest lecturers from Israel and abroad, create a fruitful interdisciplinary environment that connects design, technology, art and critical theory. The studies are intended for holders of bachelor's degrees in the field of visual communication and related fields who are seeking to expand and deepen their professional expertise and creative practice with new and interdisciplinary skills and academic and intellectual abilities. The program maintains close ties with other leading programs in the world operating at the forefront of action and discourse in the field of design. In recent years, the program has hosted heads of corresponding programs at RCA in London and Konstfack in Stockholm as well as researchers and lecturers from around the world. Among them: Guy Hoffman (MIT), Ratna Ramantan (Central Saint Martins), David Harvey (USA), Ben van der Wael (Eindhoven), Carney and Sol (Great Britain), Henning Wagenbarth (UDK). In addition, the program maintains collaborations with civil society organizations, museums and cultural institutions (Food Rescue, Herzliya Museum, Israel Museum, Liebling House), and companies (Home-Biogas).
