Vase of LIght
“And the creatures ran and returned, like the appearance of a flash of lightning.”
What is “ran and returned”?
Said Rav Yehuda: like a spark shooting from a furnace.
And what is “like the appearance of a flash”?
Said Rabbi Yosi bar Chanina: like light emerging from between shards of pottery.
(Ezekiel, Talmudic interpretations)
My beginning is dust, and my end is dust. Even the great sea is nothing but dust down below—deep, deep at its floor, filled with shipwrecks, hidden treasures, entire worlds at rest,
waiting for someone to arrive and discover they are pearls in the depths.
And the worlds braid each other’s hair before bed and whisper secrets into ears—secrets that rise, rise through the ear canals, above the surface of the sea, into vast dreams.
A star’s glimmer reflects through the window, through the curtain. I lie down—my beard full, my eyes closed, my heart beating, and my end is like a shattered shard—and I am at peace.
