Marginalia
My work is based on the illuminated manuscripts of the Middle Ages and the marginalia from this era. The collection explores the dialogue between the canonical text and the additions of later scribes. I chose three character archetypes from fairy tales first published in this time period to represent the contrast between how people represent themselves, the story that is “canonized”, and the inner, personal story revealed in the margins. The dragon, the princess, and the knight, are all aspects of human nature that I explore in the collection. Each garment is sewn from fabric the color of clean open pages of the story and accented with thousands of beads handwoven in the peyote stitch, reminiscent of medieval tapestry, that give the viewer a glimpse at the inner lives of the characters and reflects the viewers own inner life. Materials: Beads (glass, metal, and plastic) cotton and silk mix yarn, cotton fabric, fabric dye. Working techniques: Peyote stitch bead weaving, sewing.
