PlatForm: Carpet - Between an Open Space and a Demarcated Sitting Area
The carpet is an object that has rich cultural, geographical, historical, political, and financial layers. Throughout history, carpets have been used in many cultures to mark spaces, create a place, and invite people to meet and gather. “PlatForm” explores a carpet that shifts between a familiar and soft surface beneath our feet and a defined piece of furniture, demarcating a sitting area and inviting a human encounter. This duality calls to look at the unfamiliar-familiar with fresh eyes. The carpet folds into the space, creating an invitation for a new and intimate interaction between a person, the object, the material, and another person. The project uses a tufting technique to create the carpet to pattern, while hard surfaces and origami folds create structural strength that facilitates the transition between the object’s different modes.
