Refoam: A hands-on material exploration process that focuses on the encounter between industrial materials: Ytong and polyurethane foam
Despite their differences, Ytong and polyurethane foam are both produced in a similar process of foaming – reminiscent of cooking and natural formations where the material rises and takes shape. Our research process as makers driven by observation and material curiosity led to an ongoing dialogue on properties, connections, overlap, and contrast. The products express the tension between soft and hard and between structure and surface, alongside a dialogue between industrial processes and the wisdom of the hand manifested in crafts. The design language was inspired by the factories in which the raw materials were produced, the manufacturing limitations and the ability to overcome them. Exposing the raw texture enables the materials to reveal the story of their creation.
