Sand Forms: Ceramic Casting in Sand Molds

Developing soft sand molds for ceramic casting. The mold casting process offers freedom and a distinct aesthetic that preserves the tactility of the sand. The molds maintain their shape, but change with each use – so that each ceramicware is one of a kind. In the casting process, the soluble salts and sulfates combined with the sand help absorb the water from the ceramic clay and dye the ceramicware. The tea set demonstrates the possibilities presented by the molds and pushes the boundaries of this technique.
