The Pile as Material Dynamic Modular Seating Surface
Everyday life summons us encounters with different piles, from the organized and particular – a stack of chairs, a beaver dam, a breakwater; to the provisional and spontaneous – clothes on the bedroom floor, a pile of kids, sand dunes. The project examines the structure of the pile and its intrinsic values, drawing inspiration from Aggregate Architecture – an architectural approach that utilizes a large number of individual particles in loose, frictional contact to create architectural systems that can be reconfigured and reused. The project translates this approach into personal scale with a modular seating surface made of a pile of particles. The absence of permanent bonding means (connectors, adhesives) allows users to heap, disperse, and reshape the pile with each interaction; the sitting itself tightens or loosens the bonds, offering a playful experience of freedom, randomness, and constant change.
