Fire Zone
My work touches on pagan places—ancient, human places.
The image of the altar, once a divine center mediating between god and man,
becomes a stage for our pagan needs as people grappling with forces greater than ourselves.
A dialogue with fire—the consuming element—which, in my world as a potter, stands in total contrast to clay.
Where questions arise around the moment that cannot be undone—
there is sacrifice, and the fire rises to the heavens.
I’m drawn immediately to the image of a mine as an altar—
a modern altar,
a human focal point.
These thoughts come to me through spinning—
a motion tied to human rituals.
Stepping outward from the center of the clay,
I test how far I can go before I must stop.
