Yerushulaim: The Story of a Subculture through Stickers and Graffiti
This project (whose title is a play on “Jerusalem” and the Hebrew word for “margins”) examines Jerusalem’s unique subculture through stickers and graffiti at some of the city’s alternative culture hotspots: Mazkeka, Sira Pub, HaMiffal, Video Pub, Pergamon Club, and Cassette. Scanning walls and toilet cubicles uncover layers, stories, and ideas. The stickers and graffiti serve as a living, subversive archive that speaks to the community’s ideology. The visual traces form an independent, defiant, dynamic language that expresses what the mainstream won’t. This is a view of Jerusalem as experienced from the margins.
